Accessibility

Legal information

This page explains the accessibility approach followed on the official website of David Richard Smyth. The aim is to provide a clear, readable and usable website for as many visitors as possible.

Last updated: June 2026

1. Accessibility commitment

The website davidrichardsmyth.art is designed as a portfolio and information website presenting the work, biography, resume and contact information of David Richard Smyth.

The website publisher aims to make the site as accessible, understandable and usable as possible, including for visitors using assistive technologies, keyboard navigation, zoom, high contrast settings or screen readers.

Accessibility is considered as an ongoing improvement process rather than a one-time task.

2. Reference standards

The website has been developed with accessibility principles in mind, inspired by recognized standards such as the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines and the French RGAA accessibility framework.

However, the website has not yet been subject to a full formal accessibility audit. For this reason, this page should be understood as an accessibility statement and improvement commitment, not as an official declaration of full conformity.

3. Measures already implemented

Several accessibility practices have been integrated into the website structure and design, including:

  • semantic HTML structure with headers, navigation, main content areas, sections and footers;
  • responsive layout designed for mobile, tablet and desktop screens;
  • visible text links and clear navigation labels;
  • alternative text for meaningful images where relevant;
  • decorative icons marked with empty alternative text or hidden from assistive technologies where appropriate;
  • keyboard-accessible buttons for navigation, carousels, overlays and the contact form;
  • high contrast black text on light backgrounds;
  • simple typography using the Poppins font family;
  • form labels associated with their input fields;
  • clear focus and hover states for interactive elements;
  • no auto-playing sound or video content;
  • no advertising pop-ups or marketing trackers.

4. Images and artworks

This website contains many images of artworks, studio views, portraits and exhibition-related visuals. Images are central to the purpose of the site.

Meaningful images include alternative text whenever possible. Some artwork descriptions may remain brief, especially when the image is primarily presented as a visual artwork rather than as informational content.

The publisher aims to improve image descriptions progressively, especially for images that are important for understanding the page content.

5. Keyboard navigation and overlays

The website includes interactive image overlays for portfolio images, carousel images and selected static images. These overlays can be opened by activating the relevant image button.

Overlays can be closed using the close button or the Escape key. Carousel and portfolio overlays can also be navigated using the previous and next buttons, and keyboard arrow navigation is supported where implemented.

The overlay system may continue to be improved to provide even better focus management and screen reader announcements.

6. Contact form accessibility

The contact form uses visible labels, required field indicators, native HTML validation, server-side validation and a status message area for feedback after submission.

The form is protected by Cloudflare Turnstile in invisible mode in order to reduce spam while keeping the user experience as discreet as possible.

If you experience difficulty using the contact form, you may also contact:

davidrichardsmyth@gmail.com

7. Known limitations

The website is still evolving, and some accessibility limitations may remain.

Known or possible limitations include:

  • some artwork alternative texts may be shorter than ideal and may be improved over time;
  • some overlay interactions may need further testing with screen readers and focus trapping;
  • some visual artwork information may not yet be fully described in text form;
  • third-party services such as Cloudflare Turnstile, Resend, FontAwesome or hosted analytics scripts may have accessibility or privacy behavior that is partly outside the direct control of the publisher.

8. Third-party services

The website uses a limited number of third-party or external services, including FontAwesome for icons, Cloudflare Turnstile for anti-spam protection, Resend for contact form email delivery, and a self-hosted Umami analytics instance.

These services are used to support the operation, security and presentation of the website. The publisher aims to keep external services limited and to avoid unnecessary tracking, advertising systems or intrusive user interactions.

9. Feedback and contact

If you encounter an accessibility issue, cannot access specific content, or have suggestions to improve the website, you can send a message to:

davidrichardsmyth@gmail.com

Please include the page concerned, a short description of the issue, the device or browser used if relevant, and the assistive technology used if applicable.

10. Future improvements

The accessibility of the website will be reviewed and improved progressively as the site evolves.

Planned improvements may include more complete artwork descriptions, improved focus management in overlays, additional keyboard testing, and broader testing with accessibility tools.
